Amy Ferguson, Public Health Director for the Calloway County Health Department, was the featured speaker at a recent meeting of the Murray Lions Club. Ferguson, who is a diabetes educator, spoke about the causes of Type I and Type II diabetes and the prevalence of these maladies in Kentucky and Calloway County.

The World Health Organization estimates that over 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, a growing world epidemic that is expected to affect over 642 million by 2040. With these statistics and concerns in mind, Lions Clubs International has taken action through the Diabetes programs. The Lions work supports diabetes awareness, education, prevention, detection, control, and research.  The Lions will also commemorate World Diabetes Day, an annual campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation on November 14.
